Labor Leader Bryan Green today called on Treasurer Peter Gutwein to reveal the cost to taxpayers of cutting public sector jobs.

“There are reports the sackings could cost in excess of $30 million but only the Treasurer has access to the information to confirm the true cost to taxpayers,” Mr Green said.

“The Liberal Government cannot say how job cuts will affect students and teachers but it should at least be honest with Tasmanians and disclose what it expects the cost of sacking people will be.

“How many workers have already been given their marching orders in the lead up to Christmas?

“This Government’s warped priorities are hurting real people and cutting deeper and deeper into public services.

“The Liberals’ complete lack of transparency is only making matters worse.

“It is typical of the Liberals’ tricky and deceitful approach to government.

“They have a budget mess on their hands, and it’s a mess of their own making because they overpromised to Tasmanians to the tune of $400 million at the election.

“The grim reality now is that this government is forcing all Tasmanians to pay for their political pork barrelling.”
