TWO communities in the Tasmanian electorate of Lyons are among 300 across Australia to receive Federal Government National Landcare Program funding announced today.
The Tasmanian Land Conservancy will receive $21,890 for a restoration project in the Central Highlands.
And the Derwent Catchment Natural Resource Management Committee has been granted $22,000 for improved dairy practice in the region.
Federal Lyons MP Eric Hutchinson said that the successful projects will share in the $5 million 25th Anniversary Landcare grants announced by Environment Minister Greg Hunt and Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce.
The Central Highlands project will improve the condition and resilience of more than 18,000 hectares of native vegetation in the area.
This will be done by removing invasive weeds and restoring and rehabilitating woodland, grassland and peat land vegetation.
Many of these areas buffer the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage area and the Interlaken (Lake Crescent) site.
The Derwent Valley project to improve dairy practices will talk to dairy farmers in the region to plan and implement best management practices that will help protect water quality in the Derwent River.
Mr Hutchinson said that it was great to see Tasmanians getting involved in projects to protect and restore their local environments.
“These grants are focussed on engaging the community to deliver local projects which will have lasting benefits for the environment and productive agricultural landscapes,’’ Mr Hutchinson said.
