Congratulations to the winners of Bystander Stand Up Anti-Bullying Video Competition for taking a stand of their own against this very important issue.

It was a great delight to watch the videos submitted from across the state, and a very difficult decision to select the winners.

Students showed great creativity and skills in producing the short videos, which focussed on the role bystanders can play in reducing bullying.

We know that one very effective way to address bullying and cyberbullying behaviour is to empower bystanders to take action.

The students who took part should be commended for providing practical advice that anyone witnessing bullying behaviour can put into practice.

Students from Gagebrook Primary School and Waverley Primary School were the joint-winners of the Primary School category, with Riverside Primary School awarded runner-up.

Student from Rose Bay High School and Woodbridge School were joint winners of the High School category.

The four winners received an iPad and the winner and runner up videos put on the Department of Education’s YouTube channel and shared through their Facebook page.

I congratulate these young Tasmanians for taking a stand and for sharing their videos, which I greatly enjoyed watching. The videos will no doubt inspire the wider community to take a stand whenever they see bullying behaviour.

Schools are working hard to address the issue of bullying, and I urge everyone across the Tasmanian community to be part of building and maintaining respectful relationships that are free from bullying, harassment and discrimination.
