School crisis meetings to be held next week put lie to the Education Minister’s claims that savage budget cuts will not have an impact on learning outcomes.
Deputy Labor Leader and Shadow Minster for Education, Michelle O’Byrne, said the reality of the Liberal Government’s callous cuts to education was beginning to set in for school communities.
The Taroona Primary School Association will hold an emergency meeting on Tuesday to discuss the impact of the cuts, which include removing up to two teachers from every school.
“When Jeremy Rockliff claims that these savage cuts will not have an impact on learning outcomes he is either in denial or he is lying,” Ms O’Byrne said.
“School Associations know these cuts cannot be sustained without impacting on subject choices, extracurricular activities and learning outcomes.
“First he took aim at critical Pathway Planners, now he is forcing schools to slash programs like music, sport and excursions which are all an important part of the education experience.”
Ms O’Byrne said the Labor Party would stand shoulder to shoulder with school communities to fight cuts to education.
“Jeremy Rockliff and the Liberal Party need to hear loud and clear that cutting education in order to fund $400 million in unaffordable election promises is unacceptable.
“If they don’t get the message through stop work action and crisis meetings then they are clearly incapable of listening.”
