State to purchase cage-free eggs only 4

The Tasmanian Greens today welcomed confirmation that Treasury Procurement requirements now mandate that State agencies and departments must purchase non-caged eggs.

Greens Leader Nick McKim MP said this recent move will help grow demand for cruelty-free eggs, and is a win for the state’s barn and free-range egg producers.

“Coupled with the announcement from Woolworths that it will phase out selling caged eggs, the new Treasurers Instructions will continue to shift demand away from battery farmed eggs,” Mr McKim said.
“This will help encourage Tasmania’s egg producers to take advantage of growing consumer demand for genuine free-range and barn eggs.”

“The State cannot block the importation of caged eggs, but what we can do is give a boost for cruelty free egg producers.”

“This move is an incentive for more producers to transition out of battery cages, and to grow our free-range and barn egg industry.”

“We are now one step closer to building a genuine ‘clean, green and cruelty-free’ brand for Tasmania’s egg industry. We are walking the talk,” Mr McKim said.
