The Tasmanian Greens Leader Nick McKim MP today welcomed moves by Murchison MLC Ruth Forrest to bring the Same Sex Marriage Bill 2013 back for debate in the Upper House.
“A lot has changed since the Same Sex Marriage Bill was passed by the Lower House earlier this year, with many other places moving ahead on marriage equality,” Mr McKim said.
“We are really hoping that all MLCs will be prepared to approach this issue again with fresh eyes and an open heart.”
“Upper House Members should also keep in mind the recent New South Wales parliamentary committee finding that there are no constitutional barriers to state-based marriage equality laws.”
“Tasmania still has the opportunity to show national leadership on this issue, and we remain hopeful of a positive outcome.”
