Supreme Court Judge Alan Blow has been announced as Tasmania’s new Chief Justice.

He will replace Ewan Crawford who will retire at the end of April.

Attorney-General Brian Wightman made the announcement in Parliament.

He said Justice Blow was highly qualified to take on the new role.

“He’s held many distinguished positions in a career spanning 40 years in the Supreme Court, both here in Tasmania and New South Wales.”

Mr Wightman also announced two new appointments to the Supreme Court bench; barrister Stephen Estcourt QC and Launceston Magistrate Robert Pearce.

More than five years after missing out on a magistrate’s position, Simon Cooper has now been appointed to the job.

The former Attorney-General Steve Kons was forced to resign from the frontbench after misleading Parliament about shredded documents recommending Mr Cooper’s appointment as a magistrate.

The scandal led to a shake-up of the protocols for hiring magistrates and judges.

Simon Brown was also appointed a magistrate.
