Aurora heat on Greens: Libs 4

The Tasmanian Opposition anticipates the Greens’ allegiances will be put to their first real test since the election over the state-owned Aurora Energy’s financial woes.

Labor went to the state election promising to cap electricity prices but backflipped after Aurora’s shaky financial position was revealed.

Liberal leader Will Hodgman says the Government knew of the organisation’s financial problems when it made the promise.

Mr Hodgman says he will move for a select committee to investigate.

“Labor ministers were aware of Aurora’s situation well before the election,” he said.

“They knew that their electricity cap promise to Tasmanians was unaffordable and as [Treasurer] Michael Aird himself has said, was irresponsible and yet they conned Tasmanians anyway.”

Mr Hodgman says it will show where the Greens’ loyalties lie.

“This will be a test for the three non-cabinet Greens to stand up and say ‘let’s have a greater degree of accountability, transparency, let’s get to the bottom of this mess’,” he said.

Greens leader Nick McKim is non-committal.

“Well certainly the Greens have been prosecuting arguments on what the Liberals are proposing but we’ll discuss this in our party room and come to a view,” he said

The Liberals’ motion will be moved in parliament this week.
