World Environment Day Celebration!

Climate Action Hobart and The Wilderness Society have invited all their members and friends, along with all members and friends of the environment movement, to come and celebrate World Environment Day this Saturday, 5 June, at 12.00 noon at Franklin Square in Hobart.

With the theme of You Can Take STEPS Towards A Safe Climate Future, the celebration will be led in style by the Hon Nick McKim, MP, Minister for Climate Change, Alternative Energy and Sustainable Transport, who will address the gathering at 12.30 sharp.

“We’ve invited all members and friends of Tasmania’s environment groups to come along and help us to celebrate World Environment Day”, said Climate Action Hobart’s Alice Giblin.

“We’re particularly excited that the new Minister for Climate Change, the Hon Nick McKim MP, will be speaking”, said Ms Giblin. The Minister’s address will be followed by short talks by Vica Bayley of the Wilderness Society and Climate Action Hobart’s Maddie Irwin – the voice of youth.

“This is a celebration above all”, Ms Giblin said, “but there’s a serious side too. We’re calling on the Tasmanian Government to support clean jobs, 100% renewable electricity and an urgent transition to a low-carbon economy in Tasmania”.

“We are particularly concerned that the current crisis in Tasmania’s forest industry”, said Ms Giblin, “should lead to real change in this critical part of Tasmania’s economy. Band-aid solutions like transport subsidies or – worse still – forest furnaces for power generation as Forestry Tasmania has proposed, must be set aside for real and lasting solutions, particularly for the workers in our forestry industries”.

“We invite all members of friends of the environmental movement to join us and celebrate all the good work that is being done to forge a safe climate future, but also to remind our governments that there is more to be done!”

Note that Climate Action Hobart and The Wilderness Society are also supporting the TreadLightly EnviroFest at the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens on the following day, Sunday 6th June, 10am-4pm. Climate Action Hobart will be holding a stall at TreadLightly to promote our “10 Steps for a Safe Climate” and to motivate the community to take climate action.
