The Tasmanian Greens today welcomed Ms Wendy Heatley, who is a Director in a national role in the Australian Taxation Office, as their endorsed candidate contesting the Legislative Council seat of Pembroke, saying that she will present a much needed breath of fresh air to the Parliament should she be elected.
Greens Leader Nick McKim MP said that Ms Heatley, who is a lawyer, would contribute strong legal and financial management skills to the Parliament, along with a passionate advocacy for the environment, heritage and community empowerment.
Ms Heatley, 46, who is married and the mother of two children, was raised in Howrah, attended Howrah Primary School, Clarence High School and Rosny College. Ms Heatley has an extensive professional background in leadership, legal, financial and innovations roles in the Federal and State governments.
“I am delighted to have Wendy Heatley as the Greens’ endorsed candidate contesting the seat of Pembroke, and I have no doubt that she will prove to be the energetic breath of fresh air so desperately needed,” Mr McKim said.
“Ms Heatley will be a fantastic candidate, she has a proven track record as a passionate advocate for community empowerment, especially through her work at Legal Aid, and is passionate about protecting Ralphs Bay for current and future generations.”
“Ms Heatley has promised to put the heat on Labor over its appalling lack of accountability track-record, the escalating cost of living, and the urgent need for a 21st century public transport system, and pledged to take the heat off the planet.”
“The cost of living is climbing drastically for many Tasmanians, with the increase in power prices, water and sewerage charges, public transport costs and MAIB increases, and by voting for Ms Heatley, the people of Pembroke will be voting for a fearless advocate who will take on this tired Labor government and do her utmost to turn this situation around.”
“It is apparent by Labor vacating the field and deciding to not run an endorsed candidate for this by-election, that Premier David Bartlett is running scared and does not want to provide the people of Pembroke with an opportunity to express their displeasure about his government’s performance via this ballot box,” Mr McKim said.
