Isla MacGregor spokesperson for Whistleblowers Tasmania has today condemned the Government for its treatment of the Rosebery residents who have complained about toxic contamination and we support their call for an URGENT Inquiry into the matter.
Ms MacGregor said “The Government needs to respond to the public release of the residents’ letter to Dr Roscoe Taylor requesting that he ‘immediately quash the findings in the Final Report’”,
“The complaints outlined in this letter by the poisoned Rosebery residents are just one more example of another David and Goliath battle looming in Tasmania”.
“I was shocked to discover from the residents that they had been denied repeated requests for an Advocate”.
“From reading sections of the Final Report and from discussions with the residents involved, it is clear that the usual attempts to discredit and shoot the messenger have been used yet again.”
“The way that the whole investigation has been deliberately restricted in its scope, is typical of Government tactics when they need to produce a suitable outcome as litigation deterrence and fiscal damage control”.
“The residents allegations about toxic contamination are the tip of the iceberg. The Government has known for years about hotspots of contamination in Rosebery, they have known about private properties that have been remediated, and they have known about residents who have presented with arsenic poisoning, high blood lead levels and families who have left Rosebery because of the poisons .”
“How far will this Government go in an attempt to slow the clock on its toxics’ time bomb. The Government’s cover up on this issue is a National disgrace – right now peoples lives are at stake.”
