Australian Greens Senator Nick McKim will request a meeting with the United Nations’ World Heritage Committee delegation when it visits Tasmania later this year.
The committee has already rejected the State Government’s plan for logging and mining in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, and has called on the Government to strengthen the area’s conservation status.
Senator McKim will write to the World Heritage Committee this week requesting a meeting.
“It is crucial that the delegation get to see the full picture about what is at risk due to the State Government’s plans for the TWWHA,” he said.
“Frankly, the State Government simply cannot be trusted to be honest with the World Heritage Committee.”
Senator McKim said he was not satisfied with Premier Hodgman’s promise to “accept the umpire’s decision” over logging and mining in the TWWHA.
“The umpire’s decision is clear – it has already raised the finger on the Hodgman Government’s disastrous draft management plan,” Senator McKim said.
“Premier Hodgman should stop arguing the toss and start working to protect our precious wilderness areas.”
