Shadow Treasurer Scott Bacon has welcomed today’s positive ABS employment figures.

The unemployment rate is down to 6.5% in trend terms, with total employment and full-time employment both up.

“It’s great to see positive signs when it comes to jobs and the economy,” Mr Bacon said.

“Investments made in Tasmania’s strengths over a long period of time are continuing to pay dividends.

“Decisions to back the likes of agriculture, aquaculture and tourism have created a more resilient Tasmanian economy.

“We know however that certain sectors and regions in Tasmania continue to do it very tough and we must all work together to support them.

“The Government’s hands-off approach is fine for areas of the economy on the way up but it does nothing to help sectors like mining that are struggling.”
