Labor Leader Bryan Green wants to thank all the community leaders who came to Parliament House today to discuss Tasmania’s response to the asylum seeker crisis.
“With more than 60 people in the room, it was a very encouraging turnout at short notice,” Mr Green said.
“The overwhelming mood in the room was one of compassion and desire to do more to help asylum seekers.
“Today’s meeting is hopefully just the start of a meaningful Tasmanian response to an unprecedented crisis.
“From today’s meeting a working group will be established and a set of principles finalised.
“There was broad agreement that the former Pontville Detention Centre has a potential role to play as a remodelled reception facility.
“Community leaders expressed a desire to work together to establish a strong and united Tasmanian response.
“We have a rare opportunity to demonstrate leadership and show the rest of the world how compassionate Tasmania is.
“We need to send a clear message to the Federal Government that Tasmania stands ready to be a big part of Australia’s response to the unfolding crisis.”
