Changing the face of Launceston for the better
The Hodgman Liberal Government has a vision for Launceston and Northern Tasmania and a long-term Plan that is already delivering.
Our vision is to change the face of Launceston for the better and part of that is to work with UTas to make one of the single biggest investments in Launceston’s history.
UTas want to create a $200 million state-of-the-art university campus in Launceston, creating over 500 jobs.
The redevelopment of the Newnham campus will also create hundreds of jobs and give the Launceston economy an additional shot in the arm.
During the 20th century, Launceston built its reputation and its economy around being an industrial city. The university redevelopment will open the door to the industries of the 21st century in areas like advanced manufacturing, agriculture, health services, tourism and education.
The university redevelopment will bring those jobs to Launceston. Not only will it provide jobs in the short-term and long-term for this generation, it will provide jobs for future generations.
Already, UTas in Hobart is a world-leader in many areas, especially Antarctic research. But we can do better and the Hodgman Liberal Government wants Launceston and Northern Tasmania to share in the benefits. This is part of the UTas plan to attract an additional 10,000 students with an expanded offering of subjects and courses at the northern campus.
This project, funded as part of the Government’s Northern Cities Initiative will see cranes in the Launceston sky and massive job opportunities. We’ve already seen the boost to business confidence, retail sales and employment that big construction projects in the south have created and this is Launceston’s chance.
We can’t let this opportunity slip through our fingers and the Government is determined to work with the Launceston City Council, UTas and the local community to make sure that this project lives up to expectations and delivers for the North.
