I am pleased to announce that Mr Michael Brett has been appointed as Tasmania’s new Chief Magistrate.
He will take up the position vacated by current Chief Magistrate, Michael Hill, who announced earlier this year he would retire from the role.
Mr Brett brings a diversity of experience to the role, having been appointed as a Magistrate in 2010 after 24 years of legal practice in Queensland and Tasmania.
He was appointed a member of the Anti-Discrimination Tribunal in 2002, and is a past member of the Legal Aid Commission of Tasmania and Legal Profession Board of Tasmania. He has also held positions as Northern Vice President of the Bar Association of Tasmania and President of the Family Law Practitioners Association of Tasmania.
The appointment follows a selection process conducted in line with the Protocol for Judicial Appointments.
He will continue to be based in Launceston when he takes up the position of Chief Magistrate.
He will take up the position following the retirement of Michael Hill on October 21.
Vanessa Goodwin, Attorney-General
