This morning, a male member of staff was undertaking his normal duties within a high security unit when he was manhandled and pushed into a cell by two prisoners who were brandishing a makeshift weapon and threatened the staff member

The Tasmania Prison Service (TPS) immediately put in place their incident command team and activated their response group.

A negotiator and team of staff remained at the cell door and maintained negotiations with the perpetrators, successfully bringing about resolution of the incident.

The TPS is now working with Tasmania Police to gather evidence and interview those involved in order to determine why this occurred and identify those behind this incident.

The Prison is this afternoon returning to normal operations.

I would like to publicly record my pride in the TPS staff and the incident command team who managed the events of this morning. Our staff stood tall, because we are proud of what we do.

I would also like to extend my gratitude to Tasmania Police and Tasmania Ambulance Service who attended and offered their support to our people.

It is an unfortunate reality of prisons everywhere that at times prisoners will be non-compliant and seek to cause harm to others. Our staff are trained to manage such events and are well prepared to respond on occasions such as today – as was demonstrated through the successful resolution of this incident.
Brian Edwards, Director of Prisons
