As Minister for Corrections I am concerned following recent incidents involving people in custody.
I can confirm the Tasmanian Prison Service yesterday took over custody of a 26 year old man who had attempted self-harm while in a cell facility at the Devonport Court.
At the time of the incident he was in the custody of court security.
Police and Ambulance Tasmania were called to the Court and it was determined he was unharmed. TPS staff travelled to Devonport and took custody of the detainee late yesterday.
He was then transferred to the Launceston Reception Prison by TPS staff and subsequently transferred to Risdon Prison for specialist care.
At Risdon, he is receiving the appropriate care and undergoing assessment and observations as required.
I can also confirm the TPS and the courts are working together to improve safety of inmates and those on remand. We will also review any recommendations from the Coroner who is looking into three recent incidents.
I wish to thank Tasmania Police, Ambulance Tasmania and the TPS for the professional way they worked together to ensure the seriousness of this incident was kept to a minimum.
