The next five-year deal between Tasmania and the Hawthorn Football Club should ideally be the last of its kind.
Labor Leader Bryan Green welcomes the extension of the current arrangement to the end of the 2021 season but says the focus must shift to Tasmania having its own side.
“The new deal means we have six seasons of guaranteed AFL content ahead of us,” Mr Green said.
“This is the perfect opportunity for Tasmania to secure its own team in the national competition.
“We should not be aiming to sign another identical five year deal with the Hawks after this one expires.
“That’s not to say that 2021 should be the end of Tasmania’s great relationship with Hawthorn, but we must look towards the future.
“Labor’s not ruling out making future arrangements with Hawthorn or any other AFL club, but we can’t get to 2026 and be in exactly in the same position as we are now.
“Labor has a proud record of securing AFL content for Tasmania but it’s time to take the next step.
“The work must start now when it comes to seeing Tasmania have its own team in the AFL.
“The AFL must be left with no choice but to facilitate a team permanently based in Tasmania.”
