Same-Sex Marriage needs to be dealt with by a separate vote at the next Election

The Same Sex Marriage question could have been answered months ago, Independent Senator for Tasmania Jacqui Lambie said.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott should have announced a plebiscite on same-sex marriage at the next election when he first stepped into the role.

“By taking indecisive action and showing a lack of compassion for people on both sides of the debate, Mr Abbott has divided the nation.

“His first job as a Prime Minister is to unite the country,’’ Senator Lambie said.

Mr Abbott announced today same-sex marriage would not be dealt with this term and may go to a plebiscite after the election.

“He has already made life financially difficult for Aussie battlers with cuts to the pension, he plans on introducing $100,000 university degrees and still wants to make changes to Medicare – why add an unnecessarily expensive process?’’ Senator Lambie asked?

“Hold the plebiscite on Election Day as well as a referendum on Indigenous recognition, you kill two birds with one stone and it is cost effective for taxpayers.

“The people of Australia no longer trust political decisions are representative, so it’s time to give power back to the people.

“Without a majority vote, there will always be doubt in the minds of Australians and the issue will never be put to rest,’’ Senator Lambie said.
