LAUNCESTON CONSERVATIVE SPEAKERS CLUB
Subject – Lifting the Lid on Corruption in Tasmania
Speaker – Dr Andrew Roberts
In 2009 the Tasmanian Parliament passed the Integrity Commission Act with a
view to address corruption in Tasmania. Has this been effective, or was it merely
a politically correct exercise to lull us back into a false sense of security?
With the latest revelations from the Hon Murray Kellam AO as he leaves his five
year term as Commissioner of the Integrity Commission, and with earlier allegations
from former Integrity Commission CEO, Barbara Etter, all is not what it should be.
According to Murray Kellam, public servants are (still) escaping prosecution for
misconduct because the Tasmanian Government is complacent and he warns his
successor that there will be “major obstacles” to overcome!
What can the solution be?
This presentation will review the history and effectiveness of the Integrity
Commission in light of revelations from whistle-blowers and former public
servants who have tried to lift the lid on corruption in Tasmania, identifying
what the “obstacles” might be and how to overcome them.
Dr Roberts will also present his own perspectives on what he sees as truly
effective solutions for cleaning up the State and restoring confidence back
to the people. The ‘system’ is out of control, and it is time to sort it out.
There will be a time for audience input as well as questions and answers afterwards.
