Labor welcomes findings of salmon inquiry

Labor Leader Bryan Green today broadly welcomed the findings of the Senate inquiry into Tasmania’s aquaculture industry.

“The findings of the inquiry should not come as any surprise given the existing regulatory framework and commitment of the industry to the sustainability of this vitally important sector to Tasmania,” Mr Green said.

“Labor has always been a very strong supporter of the salmon industry and we look forward to its continued growth.

“The findings of the report also vindicate Labor’s decision to approve the expansion of salmon leases in Macquarie Harbor which will continue to generate valuable investment and jobs.

“The sustainability of the industry is the key to its long term viability and I welcome constructive suggestions to strengthen the regulatory regime.

“The dissenting report by Greens Senator Peter Whish-Wilson should not detract from the inquiry’s findings.

“It has been an extensive and thorough inquiry and the Greens should now accept the importance of this iconic industry to Tasmania and that it is sustainable.”
