Shadow Treasurer Scott Bacon has welcomed the latest employment figures which indicate a fall in Tasmania’s unemployment rate.

“Labor welcomes a drop in the unemployment rate to 6.7% in trend terms,” Mr Bacon said.

“The Opposition will always celebrate positive jobs data.

“But while today’s figures are pleasing, we unfortunately know there are pending job losses at businesses like Caterpillar, Cadbury and Forestry Tasmania.

“The State Government must do everything within its power to make sure the unemployment rate comes down again next month.

“Labor would also like to see the Government tackle the state’s participation rate which remains the lowest in the nation.

“Tasmanians need to have confidence to enter the workforce and Labor is committed to putting forward positive, job creating ideas.

“We’ve released policies around mining, forestry and renewable energy which would all create much needed employment opportunities.”
