The Australian Christian Lobby today called on Kingsborough councillors to dismiss an attempt to debate the issue of same-sex marriage and instead leave this debate to the Australian people.

ACL Tasmanian Director Mark Brown labelled the proposed debate as a distraction. “Kingsborough ratepayers, indeed all Australians will be able to have their say on marriage very shortly through a people’s vote,” Mr Brown said.

“Marriage is an incredibly important issue, but it is not core business for a local council. Councillors should not allow themselves to be distracted by the noisy same-sex lobby.

“This matter will be resolved very soon, one way or another, by the Australian people. That is the most appropriate way to handle such an important issue.

“In the meantime, councillors ought to stick to the issues they were elected to solve rather than debating controversial social policy.”
