The fifth meeting of the Joint Commonwealth and Tasmanian Economic Council in Tasmania today reinforced the Federal Government’s confidence in and commitment to our state.
Already, our collaborative work with the Prime Minister Tony Abbott and other members of the council has resulted in game-changing outcomes for Tasmania including $203 million for the Freight Equalisation Scheme and $60 million to progress the five Tranche 2 irrigation schemes.
Today was another opportunity to progress priorities for our state including infrastructure, population and our mantle as the gateway to the Antarctic.
It was important today to discuss Tasmania’s future infrastructure needs. The council will now collaborate with Infrastructure Tasmania on a blueprint for infrastructure including water and sewage, rail, major roads, tertiary education facilities, hospitals and schools.
Infrastructure Tasmania is in the process of developing a prioritised infrastructure project pipeline. JCTEC can play an important role in identifying and prioritising critical infrastructure for Tasmania and will consult with Infrastructure Tasmania on short, medium and longer term priorities.
The council also had productive discussions about Tasmania’s proud role as the Antarctic gateway and role in Antarctic research. The Federal Government’s $38 million investment in the Hobart Airport runway is an overwhelming endorsement of state’s strengthening link to Antarctica and competitive position as the key gateway to the continent.
It is clear that the Joint Commonwealth and Tasmanian Economic Council is delivering great benefits for our state.
I look forward to continuing to work with the Federal Government and the local business community through the council to drive reforms to boost Tasmania’s long term growth and build on our competitive strengths including agriculture and aquaculture, mining and forestry, tourism, and energy.
