Applications for the Department of Education’s new Corporal Cameron Baird VC Scholarship are now open to Year 12 students.

The scholarship will offer $1,000 to an eligible student and will act as an enduring reminder of Corporal Baird VC and his service and sacrifice.

Burnie-born Corporal Baird VC MG was Australia’s 100th Victoria Cross recipient and Tasmania’s 14th, following his actions in Afghanistan on June 22, 2013 with the Special Operations Task Group.

The scholarship will be offered to a student who is enrolled in a government school in North-West Tasmania, who intends to study at the Australian Defence Force Academy, is of good character and has contributed in a positive way to their local community.

Applications must include:

• 500 words addressing current educational studies and identified plans or application for study with the Australian Defence Force Academy; Proven contribution to the local community in a positive way; and demonstrated good character;
• Testimonial from their School Principal; and
• Testimonials from two members of the local community.

The selection committee will include a representative of the Returned Services League of Australia.
