CONTRIBUTE TO OUR COLLECTIVE SHORT STORY IN THE CREATIVE NOOK
The Creative Nook returns to Devonport Regional Gallery for the touring exhibition, National Photographic Portrait Prize, from 7 February to 8 March, and features Launceston writer Cameron Hindrum.
Launceston writer and author, Cameron Hindrum has been assisting the Gallery with the beginnings of a short story inspired by the portraits in the exhibition. Visitors to the Gallery are encouraged to add to the story, bringing the characters alive from the works in the exhibition through creative writing.
The Creative Nook operates throughout the exhibition, with the short story expected to evolve and grow as visitors continue to add to the story, resulting in a completed short story by the final week of the exhibition.
Cameron Hindrum will be assisting budding writers and Creative Nook participants, explaining the process at the Gallery on Saturday 7 February, 12 – 3 pm. The public are encouraged to drop by at any time to contribute to the short story and be guided in their writing by Cameron.
The story, titled ‘The Final’ begins with characters inspired by the following works:

Nikki Toole, The Last Season, Jake Toohey, 2013, digital print

Justin Aaron Spaull, The Conscious Unconscious, Saturday
Morning Sleep-in, 2013, digital print

“You off for a run?”

The shadow drifted backwards towards the kitchen door, and finally half of Justin appeared from the left hand side of the door frame. He was getting tall, his father noticed. He needed a haircut. In the early light, though, he still looked like a child, like the kid who’d chased the footy up and down the park all those years ago. He chased the ball for real now, Club Junior Champion two years in a row, Best on Ground in last year’s narrow grand final loss. Nick leaned on the kitchen bench…
