Right decision on DPP

Posted on

The Labor Party supports the Government’s decision not to reinstate Tim Ellis as Director of Public Prosecutions.

“I appreciate that this situation has been difficult for all involved,” Labor Shadow Attorney General Lara Giddings said.

“Faith in our justice system is of paramount importance and the community’s trust in the important position of DPP can be restored as a result of this decision.”

Ms Giddings said any reforms to the Director of Public Prosecutions Act must address the issue of tenure.

Currently, the DPP has a lifetime appointment.

“The Government must prepare amendments for the first sitting of Parliament to allow for a time limited contract for the appointment of a new DPP.

“This would bring this appointment in line with other senior appointments across the public service as well as interstate,

“It is important now for the Government to enter into urgent consultation with the community and the legal profession to determine what the appropriate length of tenure should be.”
