Time to Step into the Limelight and Take a Bow!!

The Theatre Council of Tasmania (TCT) is delighted to announce the list of Nominees for the 2015 Tasmanian Theatre Awards following a year-long assessment period which saw the judging process conclude on 31 January 2015.

Judges have spent the past 12 months travelling the length and breadth of the state to assess the 37 productions registered for Tasmania’s very first Theatre Awards, known colloquially known as The Errols.

Hobart-based entries were a leading force in the Professional Theatre category with Tasmanian Theatre Company picking up several nominations for respective productions – The Berry Man, Born From Animals and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? New company Loud Mouth Theatre also scored three nominations for its production of Venus in Furs with Tasmania Performs’ The Alzheimer Symphony and Blitz! A Sentimental Journey picking up several nods. Terrapin’s Big Baby. Big Monkey’s Sinbad the Sailor and Blue Cow’s The State of the Tasmanian Economy rounded out the Professional nominations from the south. In the Community Theatre section, Hobart Rep’s production of Journey’s End dominated the field, picking up nominations in each Award section with other Rep shows, The Talented Mr Ripley and Lady Windermere’s Fan also doing well. The Community Musical Theatre scene saw southern productions like Gilbert and Sullivan’s A Little Night Music, Kickstart/Salarts’ Breaking, Old Nick Summer School’s Jesus Christ Superstar and Musical Theatre Company’s Anything Goes facing a strong contingent of northern entries.

TCT Chairman, Rod Anderson said that “Judges were astounded by the standard of entries in the very first Theatre Awards but it also made their jobs very difficult as, in the end, they had to narrow it all down to a shortlist of finalists.

“We think that the Awards event will be one of the most unforgettable events ever held in Tasmania; we also know that this recognition – to celebrate the vast diversity and outstanding achievements of the Tasmanian Performing Arts sector, is long overdue,” Rod said.

The inaugural Awards ceremony will take place at Wrest Point Casino on Saturday, 28 February 2015. The Theatre Council of Tasmania (TCT) launched the inaugural Tasmanian Theatre Awards on 1 February, 2014 and Tickets to the 2015 Awards can be purchased at www.tasmaniantheatreawards.org.au
