The opportunity to increase visitor experiences in Tasmania’s national parks and heritage areas is under threat by an ideologically driven government obsessed with conflict and the irresponsible scaremongering of the Greens.

Labor is determined to see the heat taken out of the debate around tourism opportunities in Tasmania’s World Heritage Area.

Opposition Leader Bryan Green says while the Government needed to be more inclusive and consultative in the debate over tourism experiences in national parks, outlandish statements by Greens MP Nick McKim only inflame the situation.

“Nick McKim suggesting a hotel could be built on the banks of the Franklin River is the sort of inflammatory statement that leads to conflict,” Mr Green said.

“Labor finds itself in the middle of a fight that doesn’t need to be had.

“The Liberal Government can avoid conflict by being more consultative and less confrontational, while the Greens need to resist the temptation to be sensationalist.

“Investors will be spooked if they believe they’ll be thrust into an ideological war.

“Labor strongly supports appropriate tourism experiences in Tasmania’s World Heritage Area.

“In government we backed very worthy projects like the Three Capes Track and Pumphouse Point despite some opposition from environment groups.

“The community discussion should be driven by what’s best for the long-term future of the state, not short-term political gain.

“It’s time for everyone to take a deep breath.”
