The Liberal Government’s new year’s resolution must be to reverse its decision to cut funding for Tasmanian schools.
Shadow Education Minister Michelle O’Byrne says community outrage will not go away.
“The Government has picked a fight with school communities that it can’t possibly win,” Ms O’Byrne says.
“If Will Hodgman thought the problem would disappear with the start of a new year, he’s about to get a rude shock.
“We are in serious danger of losing our best and brightest young teachers because of the Liberal Government’s decision to axe 266 jobs from the education sector.
“Jeremy Rockliff also needs to explain which teachers will be assigned to pathway planning after his decision to axe that program.
“This time of year reminds us all of the great reasons to live in Tasmania but the government is actively driving young people away by undermining education and slashing jobs.
“Cutting funding to education simply does not make sense.
“The Liberal Government must act quickly to provide certainty to parents and teachers ahead of the new school year by restoring education funding and reconsidering its $400 million worth of unaffordable election promises.”
