Saving lives and reducing serious injuries on our roads is our number one road safety priority for 2015 and beyond.
Eight new fixed speed camera sites across the State will add an extra dimension to our key road safety focus on safer speeds in Tasmania.
Excessive speed on our roads remains a persistent factor in serious casualty crashes and adding additional capacity to our enforcement strategy can only assist to drive down our road toll.
The new fixed camera system, which has been approved in consultation with the Road Safety Advisory Council, will complement the existing sites on the Tasman Bridge. The project will be implemented by Tasmania Police.
The project will be funded with $470,000 from the Road Safety Levy.
Site locations will be selected through the combined analysis of crash data, where exceeding the speed limit was identified as a cause, as well as historical speed camera deployment data.
Two will be located in the North West, two in the North, and four in the state’s south. Motorists will be advised of the location of the new camera sites once they have been determined.
This new measure is consistent with the Auditor-General’s 2009 report on Speed Detection Devices*, and the Tasmanian Road Safety Strategy 2007-2016.
*Special Report No 85 – ‘Speed Detection Devices’, Tasmanian Audit Office 2009. Recommendation 5: “…greater use of fixed cameras in high-volume locations such as the main arterial routes out of cities.”
