Grant Delivers World-Class Tennis Courts at Lindisfarne
Tennis players on the Eastern Shore can now hone their game on Australian-Open quality court surfaces thanks to the opening of Plexicushion courts at the Lindisfarne Memorial Tennis Club.
I was pleased to officially open the Plexicushion courts on behalf of the Premier and Minister for Sport and Recreation, Will Hodgman.
These courts are Plexicushion courts with Chrome finish – the same surface used in the Australian Open – and are the only courts with Chrome finish in the State.
The Tasmanian Government contributed $40,000 to the project through Communities, Sport and Recreation Tasmania’s 2014 Major Grants Program.
The total cost of the project was around $94,000, which was also supported by a $40,000 grant from the Clarence City Council and funds from the Club.
Three courts were resurfaced as a result of the safety hazard posed by the badly worn surface and the consequent impact on participation growth.
The Club has a strong membership base and has grown in the last 12 months from 88 to more than 160 members.
The Club is now the home base of the Hobart Tennis Academy which brings several Australian ranked junior players to the Club.
Higher quality facilities at the Club will enable it to strengthen and develop the junior squads participating at the Club and attract increased participation from older members of the community.
The Club also now has the potential to host statewide championships on these courts and expects more players will want to experience this ‘elite’ playing surface.
