Encouraging figures don’t justify harsh cuts

Posted on

Deputy Labor Leader Michelle O’Byrne today cautioned the Liberal Government about cutting public sector jobs and eroding emerging signs of economic confidence.

“A fall in Tasmania’s unemployment rate to 6.8 per cent is certainly welcome but the Liberals are putting any gains at risk by attacking frontline community services like education and health,” Ms O’Byrne said.

“Labor wants to see continued growth in Tasmania and unlike the Liberals when they were in opposition, we will not continually talk the economy down.”

“Labor has a strong record of supporting growth industries like agriculture, aquaculture and tourism and it is pleasing to see these sectors driving jobs growth.

“Tasmania’s got a very bright economic future and we’re confident employment opportunities in the state will continue to grow.

“But cutting frontline services was not what the Liberals promised Tasmanians and it is putting confidence at risk.”
