An expert policy group proposed by Labor would be ideally placed to determine starting and leaving ages for Tasmanian students, according to Shadow Education Minister Michelle O’Byrne.

“Labor believes the best way forward is an integrated educational model starting from early childhood to tertiary education or training for all Tasmanians,” Ms O’Byrne said.

“We are offering a bipartisan approach to take the politics out of education reform with the expert group to be spearheaded by the University of Tasmania.

Ms O’Byrne cautioned against introducing simplistic approaches to issues like enrolment age.

“Policies in this area should be based on evidence and best practice, not simply on what is happening in other states.

“Sending children to school earlier does not necessarily result in better outcomes later in life.

“Labor believes it is far more important to provide play-based early childhood education and to ensure parents have the confidence and support to be the primary educator of their child from birth.

“This model is working effectively in Tasmania through child and family centres that combine child care, health services, play groups and other services for children and their parents in one location.”
