Travelzoo Australia, part of the largest travel deals publisher in the world with 700,000 Australian subscribers, says more Aussies hit its website immediately following big holidays – reporting a particular spike after Christmas at the start of 2015.

The company expects this to continue in the week following Australia Day, as workers look to cheer themselves up as they see the long working year stretching before them.

The phenomenon is in line with research, which shows the largest boost in general happiness does not come from the holiday itself, but from planning the trip. In fact psychologists say just looking at beautiful holiday images provides novelty as an antidote to everyday routines [1].

Travelzoo Australia Deputy General Manager Cemlyn Jones said a lot could be said for anticipation.

“People derive a lot of happiness from the simple act of planning a break,” Mr Jones said. “The excitement you feel in the months, weeks and days leading up to a holiday is one of the things that makes planning a trip so enjoyable.”
