Where does Michael Ferguson stand on NBN broken promise?

Posted on

The Minister for Information, Technology and Innovation, Michael Ferguson, must state where he stands on the Federal Government’s latest broken promise on the National Broadband Network.

Tasmanians will not get the superfast fibre to the home broadband that they were promised by both the State and Federal Liberal Governments.

Labor Shadow Minister for Information, Technology and Innovation Madeleine Ogilvie said the Tasmanian Liberals had failed to stand up for Tasmania and had been silent on the Federal Government’s latest broken promise.

“The Tasmanian communications sector is watching closely the impacts of the $11 billion deal between Telstra and NBN Co to roll out so-called ‘mixed technology’ NBN,” Ms Ogilvie said.

“This is final confirmation that the Federal Government lied to Tasmanians at the last election and never intended to honour their commitment to roll out the full NBN.”

Ms Ogilvie also warned of a looming skills crisis as a result of the constantly changing scope of the project.

“With many Tasmanians currently employed to manage and maintain the copper network, it is imperative that training is provided that will allow them to transfer their considerable skills and corporate knowledge to NBN Co.

“However, Minister Ferguson has failed to ensure that Tasmanian workers can access local telecommunications training to be part of the roll-out.

“There is no registered training organisation providing Telco training in Tasmania. It is not good enough.”
