Questions over Liberal’s Arthur Pieman promises

Posted on

Labor Leader Bryan Green today called on Parks and Wildlife Minister Matthew Groom to detail when and where the $300,000 promised by the Liberals to upgrade tracks in the Arthur Pieman region will be spent.

“All the Liberal’s election promises need to be taken with a grain of salt,” Mr Green said.

“The Liberals dudded people over cutting fares on the Spirits of Tasmania by 20 per cent and the list of broken promises is piling up at a rate of knots.

“What the Liberals promise and what they actually do shows they can’t be trusted.

“The same could be said of Adam Brooks’ guarantee that full access will be provided to the region for off-road and recreational vehicle users by Christmas.

“As much as he would like to be, Mr Brooks is not the Minister and has no responsibility or influence on decisions over the management of the area.

Mr Green called on Matthew Groom to immediately provide clarity and detail exactly what discussions he has had with Parks and Wildlife staff over future use and management of tracks in the Arthur Pieman.

“Mr Brooks is trying to give people the impression it will be open slather in the Arthur Pieman region when that hasn’t been the case under successive Labor or Liberal governments

“Does Mr Brooks actually know what tracks will be open to the public, what restrictions will be put in place and at what times of the year access will be granted?

“What is the real story in relation to the Arthur Pieman?

• What tracks will be upgraded and when?
• What tracks will be open by Christmas?
• What restrictions will be imposed?
• What new guidelines are proposed?
• When will access be granted and at what times of the year?
• Will numbers be limited?
• How do current management plans differ from previous governments?
• What future management plans have the Liberals put in place?

“It is a magnificent area and must be managed properly so future generations can enjoy it, not used for cheap political point scoring by Mr Brooks.

“Mr Brooks is trying to ingratiate himself with people who, like me, want to go to the Arthur Pieman, but he must realise it is essential the region continues to be managed appropriately so we can all continue to do that.

“I assume Mr Groom understands that and it’s about time he brought Mr Brooks into line.”
