Positive signs for Tasmania’s economy

Posted on

Shadow Treasurer Scott Bacon today welcomed the positive signs in today’s State Final Demand figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

“These figures show a trend of economic growth which began midway through 2013,” Mr Bacon said.

“It is simplistic, bordering on delusional, for the Liberals to say things have only improved since the election but if they want to claim credit, that’s their prerogative.

“Stimulus measures introduced by the previous Labor Government, like the First Home Builder Boost, have injected confidence into Tasmania’s economy and generated investment.

“We share the Government’s desire to see economic growth in Tasmania, that’s why we’ve pledged to be positive from opposition.

“But we caution the Liberal Government against knee jerk cuts to the public sector which will only sap confidence.

“Coming into Christmas, we need consumers to be positive but anecdotal evidence suggests job cuts are having the opposite effect.”
