… IN CALLING FOR AN EXTENSION OF ECO SHARK BARRIERS

Liberal Legislative Council Member, Phil Edmon, Rockingham Mayor, Barry Sammels and Cockburn Mayor, Logan Howlett have joined with Sea Shepherd to call for an Eco Shark Barrier at Palm Beach in Rockingham and Coogee Beach in Cockburn.

The barrier, was trialled successfully at Coogee Beach recently, however further funding from the Barnett Government is required for it to be reintroduced there after the Cockburn City Council approved an extension for three more years.

The introduction of the barrier at Palm Beach would provide all year round peace of mind for families, as well as local schools, who use the area for swimming lessons.

The call comes after a number of human-shark interactions within and around the Cockburn Sound region in the past 10 years, as well as at a time when the drum line policy is currently under review by the Environmental Protection Authority.

Jeff Hansen, Managing Director of Sea Shepherd Australia stated that: ” Its so great to see councils playing a role in shark mitigation strategies that actually work and don’t kill our precious marine life.

A recent example being, Manly Council in New South Wales requesting a review into the state’s shark meshing program and calling for a 30% decrease in mesh nets.”
