International Day of People with Disability

Posted on

The Liberal Government is a strong supporter of Tasmanians living with disability.

Today I joined STAR Tasmania and The Parkside Foundation to recognise the International Day of People with Disability.

Held annually on 3 December, International Day of People with Disability is an opportunity to raise awareness of people living with disability at a local level and to celebrate stories of community inclusion.

Today STAR Tasmania and The Parkside Foundation highlighted the “UR Connected” community art project.

“UR Connected” is a unique project that is building awareness of people living with disability by encouraging the creation of 2015 individual pieces of art work by politicians, schools, sporting groups and other members of the community.

The 2015 circular pieces of art will make up an atom that reflects the community coming together.

The Liberal Government is committed to supporting people living with disability and has committed to a range of measures to improve accessibility for people living with disability, including the continued roll out of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

The Government has also committed an additional $2 million, or $500,000 per year over four years, to provide individual support for people living with disability.

This funding will provide approximately 12,000 hours of additional support for Tasmanians who are not within the 15 to 24 year age group of the NDIS trial.

I urge all Tasmanians to continue to promote an understanding of disability issues across our communities, while working together to increase support for the rights and wellbeing of people living with disability.
