Fear of job cuts spooks shoppers
Shadow Minister for Small Business, Madeleine Ogilvie is concerned about the impact of public sector cuts on retail spending.
“Small business is the life blood of our economy and the Christmas period is critical for owners and staff alike,” Ms Ogilvie said.
“If there continue to be reductions in trade I am concerned that it will place pressure on staffing levels. That is in no one’s interest.
“It is disappointing to see the figures reported today as less than the national average. Sadly, Peter Gutwein’s fear campaign seems to have landed a blow on retail.
“There is still time for the Treasurer to put to bed all his big talk about job cuts and to make sure everyone has job security for Christmas.
“I have been speaking with small business constituents in Hobart and the feedback has been they want more sales.
“I’m calling on the Government to wake up to the fact that its misguided decisions have implications for the economy.”
