Employment figures welcomed
Shadow Treasurer Scott Bacon today welcomed the latest set of Tasmanian employment figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
“It’s great to see total and full time employment up and the unemployment rate slightly down,” Mr Bacon said.
“These figures continue a gradual positive trend that started mid-way through 2013.
“While today’s stats indicate a strengthening economy, I’d caution the Liberal Government against pushing ahead with its cuts to the public sector.
“Taking teachers out of schools will not only put people on the unemployment queue in the short term, it will impact on the education of our young people and their ability to get a job in the future.
“Labor shares the Government’s desire to see Tasmania’s unemployment rate below the national average but takes no pleasure from the national figure going up.
“We shouldn’t celebrate being closer to the Australian average off the back of the national figure rising.
“Labor’s very positive about the state’s economic future and the private sector will benefit from both sides of politics talking the economy up.”
