Delivering Roads for Tasmania’s Future

Posted on

The Liberal Government is committed to building a modern transport network for Tasmania that supports investment and jobs growth while improving the travelling experience for locals and visitors alike.

Today, Premier Will Hodgman and Infrastructure Minister Rene Hidding released the State of Our Roads report – a snapshot of Tasmania’s state roads network that will form the basis of Infrastructure Tasmania’s 2015 State Road Audit.

“The Liberal Government, working alongside the Australian Government, is committed to delivering ambitious capital upgrades to our road network, with more than $700 million to be invested over four years under the Roads for Our Future program,” Mr Hodgman said.

“The State of Our Roads report highlights the job that is before us.

“Generally, the report shows our roads are in good condition, but it also found historical underfunding of about $250 million over the past 10 years in rebuilding roads and bridges under the previous government.”

Mr Hidding said this meant that while the Government remained strongly committed to delivering new road infrastructure, it also recognised the need to invest in maintaining and renewing Tasmania’s existing road and bridge network.

“That’s why more than $268 million will be invested in Tasmania for maintenance, line marking and improving road surfaces over the forward estimates,” Mr Hidding said.

“One of the major projects under our maintenance program is the $1.5 million Glen Huon Road upgrade, for which tenders have been now called.

“Work on the road surface of a 2.5 kilometre section of the important Huon Valley traffic route between Glen Huon and Judbury is expected to begin in February and be completed by around May.

“This project and our release today of the State of Our Roads report demonstrate that the Liberal Government is getting on with the job of building and maintaining a modern transport network for Tasmania.”
