Shadow Attorney-General Lara Giddings today called on the Government to provide clarity over the position of Director of Public Prosecutions in Tasmania.
“Now that an appeal court has upheld the conviction of Mr Tim Ellis, the time has come for the Attorney-General, Vanessa Goodwin, to end uncertainty over the position.
“The death of Natalia Pearn is tragic for all involved, particularly for her family who have lost a beautiful daughter.
“Ms Goodwin must either give good reason why Mr Ellis should stay in his job or seek to have him immediately removed under s.10 of the Director of Public Prosecutions Act 1973 (No. 11 of 1973).
“Before a new DPP is appointed, I would urge the Government to amend the legislation of appointment to allow for a time limited contract.
“Currently, the DPP has a lifetime appointment.
“This would bring this appointment in line with other senior appointments across the public service as well as interstate for example, New South Wales has appointed their DPP for a ten year term.”
