World’s Top Orienteering Athletes to take to Tasmania’s trails

Tasmania’s tourism operators and local businesses are poised to reap the benefits as Orienteering Tasmania prepares to welcome 900 athletes from 15 countries in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region in January, 2015.

The Liberal Government is pleased to support Orienteering Tasmania as it hosts the 2015 Oceania Orienteering Championships and round one of the International Orienteering Federation 2015 World Cup.

Today’s official launch marks the final stretch of planning and preparation for organisers and I am pleased to represent the Premier in expressing the Liberal Government’s support.

The Oceania championships and the World Cup will comprise 15 races over eight days between January 2 and January 11, 2015 as athletes take to courses in Launceston, Swansea, Coles Bay and St Helens.

Tasmania has a strong reputation for delivering outstanding international orienteering events and has previously hosted the 1988 Asia-Pacific Championships and the 1992 World Masters.

This world-class event is a fantastic opportunity to Tasmania to showcase its natural assets and recreation facilities and the tourism impact is expected be significant with visitor bed nights estimated to exceed 10,000 over the eight days.

The Liberal Government is committed to growing Tasmania’s visitor numbers to 1.5 million a year by 2020, and events such as these will help us achieve that target.
