CALL ON TOURISM TAS TO THROW WEIGHT BEHIND RAINBOW ACCREDITATION PROGRAM

Tasmanian Gay and Lesbian Rights Group spokesperson, Rodney Croome, has welcomed the removal from the Airbnb website of a Hobart Airbnb whose advertised house rules said same-sex couples were not welcome.

“I congratulate Airbnb for taking swift action to protect its good name and the good name of the Tasmanian tourism sector.”

“An accommodation ad that effectively says ‘no gays’ is as offensive and as illegal as an ad which says ‘no blacks’ or ‘no Asians’.”

“To ensure the highest possible standards in Tasmania’s tourism industry, I urge Tasmanian Airbnbs to seek accreditation through the Tourism Industry Council of Tasmania’s ‘Rainbow Tourism Tasmania’ program which is the best gay-friendly accreditation program in Australia.”

“I also urge Tourism Tasmania to throw its weight behind the TICT program to ensure all visitors to our island are welcome, regardless of their sexual orientation.”
