Activist group Save the Tarkine has mounted a Federal Court challenge to a mine approval in Tasmania’s north-west.
The group’s challenging the State Government’s approval of an iron ore mine at Riley Creek, citing risk to the endangered Tasmanian devil.
Yesterday the Perth-based miner Venture Minerals announced it was preparing to start production, and said transport and port contracts were well advanced.
Save the Tarkine has previously unsuccessfully challenged the Riley Creek mine’s approval at the state tribunal level.
The Greens have swung behind the court challenge.
The Greens Leader Christine Milne says she sees the latest appeal as a test case.
