'Mine impact minimal on devils' 4

A LEADING Tasmanian devil expert who assisted in the discovery of the fatal devil disease says the Shree Minerals iron ore mine will have a small impact on the endangered animal.

Environment minister Mark Butler re-assessed former minister Tony Burke’s approval for the mine because of a court technicality.

The second approval was given subject to a number of conditions designed to further protect the flora and fauna of the Shree Minerals site.

Former government wildlife biologist Nick Mooney said the restrictions, if followed, would lead to minimal impact on devil populations.

Mr Mooney undertook devil surveys on the Nelson River Bay site and found the area had a low density devil population.

This evidence was produced in the court deliberations.

Mr Mooney said farming developments, such as Woolnorth, would have a greater impact on Tasmanian devil populations.
