… As State Review ( Bryan Green, here ) Commences
The Tasmanian Greens urged all Tasmanians who value the state’s current Genetically Engineered-Free status to get involved in the review of that policy position announced by the Minister today.
Greens Primary Industries spokesperson Kim Booth MP said this review is crucial to ensuring our current GE free moratorium is extended beyond the current expiry date of November next year.
“Tasmania’s GE-Free status is crucial to our capacity to position and differentiate ourselves in the national and global markets,” Mr Booth said.
“We have to accept that we cannot compete with bulk low-value commodities. Instead it is the high-quality differentiated markets that are expanding.”
“Tasmania led the way when it introduced the current GE-free moratorium for food crops a decade ago, after a long and sustained campaign by the Greens along with many produce growers and hospitality businesses reliant on that produce.”
“The Greens urge all those who Tasmanians who support, and rely upon, our genuine clean, green and GE-free brand to get involved and have a say in this review.”
“Our GE free status, current markets and future opportunities rely on it,” Mr Booth said.
